Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional cultural practices form an integral part of societal identity, preserving history, values, and heritage. In Argungu Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, renowned for its cultural festivals such as the Argungu Fishing Festival, public relations (PR) plays a vital role in promoting and sustaining these traditions. PR efforts, including media campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and event promotion, have been instrumental in highlighting the cultural significance of these practices. As noted by Abdullahi and Ibrahim (2024), PR campaigns significantly enhance cultural preservation and community participation. This study explores the effectiveness of PR in promoting traditional cultural practices in Argungu LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural richness of Argungu LGA, the influence of modernization and limited awareness pose threats to the preservation of traditional practices. While PR has the potential to address these challenges, its effectiveness in promoting cultural heritage in Argungu LGA has not been comprehensively studied.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify PR strategies used to promote traditional cultural practices in Argungu LGA.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in preserving and sustaining cultural heritage.
  3. To recommend improved PR approaches for enhancing cultural promotion in Argungu LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  2. How effective are these strategies in preserving cultural heritage?
  3. What recommendations can enhance PR efforts in promoting cultural practices?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. PR strategies significantly influence the promotion of traditional cultural practices in Argungu LGA.
  2. Effective PR campaigns increase community participation in cultural preservation.
  3. Enhanced PR strategies can sustain cultural heritage in Argungu LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study provides insights into the role of PR in cultural preservation, benefiting cultural stakeholders, PR practitioners, and policymakers. Its findings will support efforts to sustain traditional practices in Argungu LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR strategies promoting traditional cultural practices in Argungu LGA, Kebbi State, analyzing their implementation and impact.
